The Korea Republic National team took their soccer dominance beyond Asia on Saturday afternoon by beating the Greece National Football team 2-0 in their Group B opening match on the second day of the 2010 FIFA World Cup taking place in South Africa.
The South Korea football team put themselves in vintage position gaining maximum points as they await results of the other Group B contenders Nigeria and Argentina.
Korea Republic got a well deserved lead goal by LEE Seung Yeoul in the 7th minute in the match played at Nelson Mandela Bay/Port Elizabeth stadium in the heat of Saturday afternoon in front of 30,150 crowd.
The Koreans were not necessarily impressive but showed more purpose than the Greeks who looked unprepared for Korean challenges on this afternoon.
The Korea Republic team added to their dominance and advantage in the 53rd minute when Manchester United winger PARK Ji Sung took a superb shot past Greece goalkeeper Alexandros TZORVAS. The South Koera captain PARK Ji Sung was instrumental throughout the match delivering defense splitting passes through the Greece midfield and defense and could have seen his team win by a bigger margin on a luckier day.
Korea Republic Coach HUH Jung Moo was the happy man of the evening as he watched the South Korean team create and take important chances and the South Korea defense contain the threats from the experienced Greece team.
Greece who upped their soccer credentials by winning the UEFA EURO 2004 cup tried some advanced pressure in the second half but did little to permeate the determined Korea defense, which kept Korea keeper JUNG Sung Ryong with less trouble.
Greece Coach Otto REHHAGEL will need to ransack the best items in his tactics bag if he is to help Greece appearing at the World Cup finals for the second time to win the remaining two matches against Nigeria and Argentina in the remaining two Group B games and be able to go beyond the group stages.
