DR. SYLIVIA TAMALE
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Sylvia Tamale is one of the leading female academicians and human rights activists in Uganda. She is a Lecturer and former Dean of the Makerere University Faculty of Law. Dr. Tamale has a bachelor of laws with honours from Makerere University, Masters in Laws from Harvard Law School and doctorate in Sociology and Feminist Studies from the University of Minnesota 1997.
Dr. Tamale got a diploma in legal practice at Makerere Law Development Centre in 1990.
She became the first female Dean of Law at Makerere University in 2004.
Dr. Tamale has lectured law in so many countries including South Africa and Zimbabwe. She has authored several law and women related articles and is globally known for her acclaimed book ‘When Hens Begin to Crow: Gender and Parliamentary Politics in Uganda (1999.’
DR. NORA MULIRA
She is a leading ICT scholar at Makerere University and a member of the Research ICT African network in Uganda. Dr. Mulira is a wife to the former ICT Minister, Dr. Ham Mulira.
She holds a PhD from the Delft University of Technology, Netherlands and Masters of Science from the London School of Economics, University of London in the United Kingdom.
Dr. Nora Mulira is currently the Director of the Directorate for ICT Support at Makerere University. Before she held the above post Dr. Mulira was the Deputy Director in charge of the Information Systems (IS) and E-learning policy formulation at Makerere University. Dr. Mulira has vast research experience in health informatics and ICT among others.
DR. ELIZABETH KIWALABYE
She is one of the leading scholars who have served the country in so many areas of human development and different capacities. Dr. Elizabeth Kiwalabye is currently the Deputy Vice Chancellor of Muteesa I Royal University in Masaka. Muteesa I Royal University is owned by Buganda Kingdom.
Dr. Kiwalabye is also the former Head of the Department of Veterinary Medicine at Makerere University. She is a member of National Executive Committee of Uganda YMCA and a member of Mukono YMCA Branch Board among other posts of responsibilities.
PROF. JOY KWESIGA
Dr. Kwesiga is also a founding member of Action for Development (ACFODE), national Ugandan women Non-Governmental Organization.
In 1967 Dr. Kwesiga got her bachelors of Arts in Geography (Hons) from the University of East Africa. She says she received her Masters of Education and further education from the University of London in 1987. In 1993 she got a doctorate at the same University of London.
Prof. Kwesiga says she holds several certificates in Gender training, management, civic education and empowering of women. She also holds a first class diploma in Public Administration from the Institute of Kampala Institute of Public Administration.
Dr. Kwesiga has won so many academic awards. For example in 1998 she got a ford foundation individual award for a PhD research and a Nuffield foundation award for a study tour of British Universities.
DR, MARIA MUSOKE
Dr. Maria Musoke is the Director of Makerere University Library. She says she has been in the position for five years and her contract ends in November 2009. Dr. Musoke’s professional background is in the biological sciences, but later she changed to information science. She Joined Makerere University as a student in 1975 and graduated in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science degree (honours). She also holds a diploma in education majoring in zoology, education and Botany.
Dr. Musoke says after graduation she joined Makerere University Staff Development as a Librarian trainee. After gaining interest in Library she did a postgraduate diploma in Librarianship at Makerere University’s East African School of Library and Information Science (1979-80) and later Masters in Librarianship and Information Science Degree at the University of Wales specializing in health information.
Dr. Musoke was the first Ugandan woman to hold a PhD in Information Science. She did her PhD at the University of Sheffield in United Kingdom. She is also the founder Member of the Department of Women and Gender Studies at Makerere University.
ASSOC. PROF. LILLIAN TIBATEMWA-EKIRIKUBINZA
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Lillian Tibatemwa-Ekirikubinza is arguably Makerere University’s first hand woman. She is the acting Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. He substantive position of Deputy Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic Affairs is still the top most position held by a female at Makerere University.
Dr. Tibatemwa is a holder of a PhD in law from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark.
She holds Masters Commercial Law from the University of Bristol, United Kingdom and a Bachelor of Laws (Hons) degree from Makerere University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice from Law Development Centre in Kampala.
Dr. Tibatemwa served as the deputy dean of the Faculty of Law, Makerere University before she was appointed the first female Deputy Vice Chancellor of Makerere University. Dr. Tibatemwa is widely established in areas of children rights, women rights and constitutionalism. She has written a number of law articles on constitutionalism, children and women rights including a book ‘Gender and Human Rights: A case Study of Polygamy among the Basoga of Uganda (2003).’
Dr. Tibatemwa is has also held other positions of responsibility, including member of the academic board of Makerere University Business School, Nakawa, board member of the Uganda National Bureau of Standards, member of the British Institute of International and Comparative Law and commissioner of Uganda Law Reform Commission among other positions.
Mrs. Percy Night Tuhaise
She is the Deputy Director and Principle Lecturer of the Law Development Centre Kampala.
Tuhaise is a holder of Bachelors of Laws (Hons) of Makerere University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice of Makerere Law Development Centre. She is also a senior advocate in Kampala.
