Health experts decries increased cervical cancer in Africa

Health experts from East Africa have expressed concern over the high incidences of cervical cancer in the region and Africa in general.

The region according to health statistics is leading on the continent, with mortality rate at 34.6% per 100,000 people diagnosed.

Speaking at the ongoing East African Medical Expo, a Consultant Obste-trician working with the Aga khan University hospital Dr Timona Obura says unless the high incidence rate is checked more people could continue to lose their lives.

He noted that Close to 70% of cervical cancer patients in East Africa are expected to die in the next 5 years, challenging women to undergo regular checkups;

Globally over 270,000 deaths are registered each year as a result of cervical cancer.
