The Deputy Spokesperson of the Democratic Party (DP), Kenneth Kakande has said the heavy police and Uganda army deployment in Mukono North constituency is intended to intimidate voters.
The people of Mukono North are voting their Member of Parliament today amidst tight security. There are eight candidates in the race, Betty Nambooze of DP and Peter Bakaluba Mukasa of the ruling National Resistance Movement.
Others are Charles Jjingo, Mutyaba Talemwa, John Ssebunya, Kiggundu Zirimala, Zzimula Mukwaya and Mubiru Michael.
Kakande says today’s voting in Mukono is a litmus test for the ruling government and Uganda Electoral Commission. He was addressing journalists in Kampala today.
Kakande says the deployment in Mukono North is beyond normal. He says the soldiers are beating and arresting supporters of Betty Nambooze, an opposition candidate in the race.
Kakande further alleged that Members of Presidential Guard Brigade and Kalangala Action Plan of Maj. Kakooza Mutale have been also deployed in Mukono North.
He says Maj. Mutale with his bus is in Mukono beating people who are not flashing the government sign.
“This is intimidation,” Kakande says. The Deputy spokesperson says the election is about people in Mukono north but the government soldiers are beating everyone they suspect not to be supporting the government candidate, Bakaluba Mukasa.
He says the people of Mukono North need representation in Parliament but police and the government soldiers are denying them chance.
