The representative of the Parliament of Uganda in Parliamentarians Take Action for Maternal and Newborn Health organisation, Hon. Sylvia Sinabulya has said that only 42 percent of women in Uganda get the assistance of skilled health workers during delivery of babies.
Sinabulya who is also the Member of parliament for Mityana district told the Parliamentary Action for Maternal Health and Newborn Health that one of the reasons for the low number of women attended to during delivery is lack of political will and commitment towards the improvement of maternal health in Uganda.
The MP attributed the problem to poor financial support given to maternal health sector curtailing the ability to recruit more skilled health workers.
According to the Uganda Demographic Health Survey 2008, Uganda faces 435 maternal deaths per 100 thousand live births adding up to 6000 maternal deaths per year.
