Thousands of Christian pilgrims from Uganda, Kenya, German, South Africa, India, United States of America and other countries have attended martyrs day prayers in Namugongo Kampala today.

The Christians have gathered to remember the death of Uganda Martyrs in 1886 on the orders of the former king of Buganda, late Mwanga II.

The day is marked every year on June 3 in memory of over 22 Christian martyrs.

 At the Catholic shrine the prayers are being led by Bishop Henry Sentongo of ecclesiastical province of Tororo, while at the Protestants shrine the prayers are being led by priests from West Ankole Diocese. The Catholic ecclesiastical province of Tororo comprises of Tororo, Moroto, Jinja and Kotido among other dioceses.

Hundreds of other bishops are participating in today’s Martyrs Day celebrations.
