Kenya based East African Portland Cement has announced plans to set up a similar company in Uganda in order to boost their presence in the East Africa Community whose customs union will become operational on July 1st 2010.

Eng. John Nyambok, the Managing Director of East African Portland Cement says the company will set up a subsidiary in Uganda soon in order to bring its services closer to its customers in East Africa countries.
It is easier for a company producing in Uganda to export goods to neighbouring countries Rwanda, Southern Sudan, Kenya, Tanzania and Democratic Republic of Congo.
He told the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation on Wednesday that the Board had set various strategic moves into place to ensure that EAPCC continues to grow its market share not only in Kenya but in the greater East African region as a whole.
“This actually goes along with our vision and mission of being Regional Leader in the Provision of Cement, Innovative Cement Products and Solutions and to provide Cement for Infrastructural solutions to the satisfaction of our stakeholders,” Nyambok says.
The coming of East Africa Portland Cement in the Uganda cement market adds to a string of Kenyan investments in neighboring Uganda.
He also revealed that the East African Portland Cement intends to shift its source of energy from oil fuel to coal following concerns of high expenditure on energy generation using oil.
Nyambok says the company is coming up with more environmentally friendly products and by-products, including the use of bio diesel, which will help in value addition.
