The former Katikkiro (Prime Minister) of Buganda kingdom, Dan Muliika has said traditional leaders are human beings like others and are free to actively engage in active politics.
Muliika was speaking in responce to advice given last week by the former Minister of Uganda for Local Government, Bidandi Ssali to persons to avoid engaging in active politics while at the same time hold positions in cultural institutions.
Bidandi also gave his views on the subject in reference to a recent announcement by two former Katikkiros of Buganda, Joseph Semwogerere and Muliika that they will support the Inter Party Coalition of opposition political parties come 2011 general elections in Uganda.
The two Katikkiros made the remarks last week during a function organized by leaders of opposition Forum for Democratic Change to launch their election campaign in Buganda region.
Muliika says since traditional leaders are allowed to vote politicians during election time, they should also be allowed to engage in active politics because the decisions politicians make directly affects traditional leaders too.
