The Climate Change Media Partnership has announced the fourth annual fellowship programme.  They are inviting all journalists from the global South with an interest in climate change to apply for a 2010-11 fellowship.

The fellowship programme

The CCMP fellowships run for nine months from July 2010 and provide direct access to different stakeholders, including: scientists, indigenous peoples, government delegates, civil society groups, business leaders and representatives of intergovernmental institutions. The main element is support to attend the UN climate change negotiations in Cancun, Mexico, from 29 November to 10 December 2010. Travel will likely commence on 27 November and depart from Cancun on 10th or 11th December 2010.

The summit

Fellows will spend an intensive two weeks of reporting on the negotiations and taking part in the CCMP programme of editorial and thematic mentoring and training. The Climate Change Media Partnership will provide travel, travel insurance, accommodation and a daily subsistence expense allowance to the journalists selected. Highlights of the programme (some of which are optional) include:

  • Orientation Day – This all-day session will introduce journalists to the summit environs, the negotiation process, and logistical information about the two week programme.
  • Day trip to report on climate change issues in Mexico.
  • Media Clinic – This one-day event includes lively panel discussions by experts on the negotiations and key policy issues. You will be able to field questions to panel speakers and line up interviews.
  • Editorial support and mentoring from senior environment editors and internationally recognised experts on climate change policy and science.
  • Covering the summit – Daily reporting on negotiations, press conferences, side events, etc.
  • Evaluation activities – Your experience as a CCMP fellow provides valuable information for improving our work and shaping future programmes. Activities will include group discussions to reflect on specific activities as well as interviews and completion of a written questionnaire.
  • Development and Climate days – This weekend event organised by IIED and partners provides an opportunity to learn about climate change and development with a special focus on adaptation.
  • Daily morning briefings with CCMP editors – These sessions will give you the opportunity to reflect on the previous day’s activities, discuss story ideas with the other fellows and editors and flag up any interesting meetings and side-events happening that day.
  • Communication side-event – You will be able to participate in a debate about communicating climate change.
  • Matchmaking service – We put journalists in contact with climate-change experts and negotiators from their countries, as well as with representatives of poor and marginalised communities that are vulnerable to climate change.
  • Editorial sessions on the basics of climate science and key elements of story writing.

Both during the summit and for the remainder of the fellowship, journalists can also expect:

  • Email-based mentoring from CCMP staff.
  • Networking with other journalists from around the world.
  • Up to the minute information on policy and scientific developments in climate change.
  • Introductions to key climate change experts for interviews.
  • Have your work expertly edited, profiled on websites and internationally distributed.
  • Some fellows may also be commissioned to research, write and produce a feature story for international distribution, working with a CCMP editor.
  • Journalists will be encouraged to stay in contact with the CCMP to receive long-term support in the form of future commissions, briefings and access to policy-makers, and to join existing networks of journalists to continue building their skills and experience.

THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING IS MIDNIGHT UK TIME (BST) ON 29 JUNE 2010

An international panel will then select the fellows and successful applicants will be notified by Monday 28 July.
