The President of Uganda, Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has been called upon to make public the report of the investigations into the death of former Defense Ministry Permanent Secretary, Brig. Noble Mayombo.
Twerwaneho Listerners Club, a human rights pressure group in Tooro says the people of Tooro have waited patiently for the report into the controversial death of Mayombo who hailed from Tooro, but the government has not made the report public, more than three years after Mayombo’s death.
Brig. Mayombo who was a former Aide De Camp for President Musveni and one of his trusted allies and much loved army officer died in a Nairobi hospital on April 30th 2007 after a short illness.
Tweraneho says the president during the burial of the fallen hero stated that he had suspicion in Mayombo’s death, and consequently ordered for an investigation.
Twerwaneho joins host of other individuals and organizations to call upon the government to release the report into the death of Mayombo. In May 2008, Arua Municipality MP, Akbar Huisseihn Godi petitioned the government to release the report,
State House then released a report quoting President Museveni saying comprehensive toxicology tests carried out in the world’s best laboratories ruled out poisoning of Mayombo, who was also the Baord Chariman of the government owned Vision Group of companies that owne The New Vision, Bukedde, Sunday Vision, Vision Printery, Radio West, Etop, Rupiny, Orumuri, Etop radio, Radio Rupiny, Vision Voice as well as Bukedde TV and Bukedde fm.
“The people in this region have a right to know who is responsible for the death if there was any foul play,” Twerwaneho Listeners club said in a statement on Friday.
The group is threatening civil political action if the government fails to make the Mayombo death report public “to clear its name and the suspicion citizens have.”
“Failure to make the report public, Twerwaneho Listeners Club which is a human rights NGO based in Fort Portal in its constitutional mandate will organize civil actions to express people’s dissatisfaction to government’s non action to respect citizens’ lawful calls,” says the statement signed by the group’s coordinators Gerald Kankya and Joram Bintamanya.
