Infant mortality in developing countries falls to 72 per 1000 live births

Child mortality

The number of children that die before attaining the age of five years in developing countries like Uganda has fallen from 99 per 1000 live births to about in 1998 to 72 per 1000 births in 2008.

Though this may be so, the Global to Action has expressed dissatisfaction with the progress of developing countries in averting the challenge of infant mortality saying that though this is good progress in the fight against infant mortality however this aggregate decline falls short of the 66% reduction target.

GCAP says in its policy brief that the progress is also uneven both among and within countries yet it is better if the progress was uniform.

Infant mortality is still a big challenge in many developing countries more so in Africa and is the reason why the African Union Summit that is sitting in Kampala has chosen a theme that focuses on maternal and child health.
