After Uganda ratifying the African Charter on Women’s rights commonly known as the Maputo Protocol, Women First a coalition for African Women’s rights has urged the government to quickly domesticate and popularize the Maputo Protocol.
Uganda ratified the Maputo Protocol last week to become the 28th country in Africa to ratify the protocol and the third East African country to ratify the protocol after Rwanda and Tanzania.
In a media statement, Women First has said that the step that government took to ratify this protocol deserves to be applauded but the government after doing that it needs to domesticate this protocol and also ensure that it is made popular in Uganda.
The activist group says that similarly organs of the government like Parliament should ensure that they make laws that will allow the domestication of this protocol as soon as possible.
The Maputo Protocol was adopted by the African Union Heads of State and Government at the second Ordinary session of the assembly of the African Union in July 2003 and Uganda signed the protocol in 2004.
