The Head Teacher of Hamdan Girls School, Shifa Senyonga has had no kind words for the media accusing it of media of bias reporting on the fire that gutted one of the school dormitories on June 20th 2010 leaving property over 300 students destroyed and one student dead.
The fire that gutted the school at about 9pm on that fateful night left Wotoma Fiona a 15 year old Senior 3 student dead and with one dormitory of the Mbale based school, Mariam House which housed 106 students completely burned down by the fire with property worth million of shillings destroyed.
As a result of the fire in Mariam House, the property of the other students in other dormitories was destroyed in the stampede that followed and the students that lost their property in this stampede were residents of two nearby dormitories, Khadija and Sumaya house.
In press statement to Ultimate Media, Senyonga has said that however some media houses reported that over 100 students had died in the fire and that a good number of them had been injured due to what some media houses called congestion which she says is false reporting.
The Head Teacher says while the school regrets the unfortunate fire incident, such biased reporting was aimed at damaging the otherwise good image of the school and should not be taken seriously.
Senyonga has also appealed to various well wishers to donate to the reconstruction of Mariam House that was burnt down by the fire.
