Makerere University School of Public Health has launched the “One Health” initiative, which is aimed at bridging the gap between the human and veterinary medicine through enhanced educational and communication campaigns and strengthening of public health systems especially in developing countries like Uganda.
As part of creating more awareness on the scheme, the school of public health has organised a public lecture at Imperial Royale Hotel on Monday 9th August 2010 at 2:30pm to sentisize the public on the initiative to enable the public appreciate the initiative.
While speaking to journalists in Kampala at the Launch of the Initiative, the Dean School of Public Health, Dr. William Bazeyo has said that the school will also organise a two week global Health Institute Course.
Bazeyo says these activities are highly expected to contribute to increased public knowledge of animal to human transmission of disease and build capacity of health professionals in the country to handle emerging public health threats.
With wild and domestic animals fast becoming the source of many diseases thus making it an emerging health challenge, the “One Health” initiative seeks to establish and maintain partnerships between human and veterinary medicine.
The initiative is a recognition that human, animal health and the environment are all interconnected and integrated.
