Police has arrested at least 8 food vendors at Mulago hospital today morning in a move meant to tighten security and improve hygiene.
Those arrested include seven ladies and one man. They were arrested in an operation conducted across all hospital wards.
The vendors were selling much of their food in polythene bags, in a condition the hospital administration described as unhygienic.
The officer in charge of the Mulago police post Achiria Godfrey says the operation was conducted in close coordination with the hospital administration.
Achiria adds that the arrests were effected as a security measure, since the vendors had unlimited access to the hospital wards, despite not being part of its staff.
The vendors however say, they had operated in the hospital for over 20 years without posing any risks.
They are pleading for mercy, adding that the food vending was their only source of livelihood. The police say they will be charged with trespass.
