Media wants government to refrain from appealing against ruling on sedition

The Independent Media Council of Uganda has appealed to the government to refrain from appealing against the decision of the Constitutional Court ruling declaring the law on sedition illegal if it wants to demonstrate its belief in the freedom of expression as it always purports to.

The Constitutional Court on Wednesday 25th August ruled that Sedition was unconstitutional and infringed on the constitutionally protected freedom of expression after in case brought against the government by Andrew Muwenda challenging the law.

The law that was introduced during the colonial government has been used by various governments of post independent Uganda to suppress the freedom of expression and opposition against their governments.

The Acting Executive Secretary of the Independent Media Council of Uganda Haruna Kanaabi has suggested that if the government refrains from appealing against the courts decision on, the government will find it easy to assure and convince Ugandans about its high regard for the freedom of expression.

The Minister of Information and National Guidance Kabakumba Matsiko already indicated in an earlier communication that the government would appeal against the decision after loosing the first battle in the constitutional court.
