Uganda independent MPs face suit in constitutional Court

A group of MPs is petitioning the constitutional to stop independent members of Parliament competition in the current political party primaries from continuing their seats in parliament.

Aruu County MP, Odonga Otto

The MP for Aruu County Odonga Otto and Kampala Central MP, Elias Lukwago say that over 37 independents mps in the 8th Parliament are contesting in NRM primaries, centrally to the law which bars them from associating with any political party.

Otto says Independent MPs who are contesting in NRM primaries should not be allowed back in parliament since they no longer represent the people who elected them. He says the people they represent elected them as independent MPs but they have now turned to one political party, which means such legislators no longer represent their constituencies.

Lukwago told journalists in Kampala today that the current elections law does not allow any MP who is in parliament as independent to engage in partisan politics.

He says they want the constitutional court to pronounce itself on whether MPs who are in the August House on the Independent ticket should join a given political party and come back to parliament to represent a given constituency as independent MPs.
