The Uganda National Forestry Authority has been ordered to pay 3.6 billion shillings to a Kampala business man over breach of contract.
Julius Charles Twagira, the managing director of beach side development limited dragged and charged the national forestry authority after it handled over 25 year lease of developing kyewaga forest reserve at the same time handed it to another developer in 2006 .
Three judges of the Court of Appeal Justices Amos Twinomujuni, George Engwau and Stephen Kavuma ordered the forestry body to pay 3.6billion shillings for compensation and damages.
Twagira paid US$ 64,000 to NFA for a lincence to develop 2.6 hectares of land at Kyewaga forest reserve in Entebbe, but in 2006, NFA ordered him to vacate the said land and instead arrested him on charges of criminal trespass.
Former Nakawa High Court Judge Justice Joseph Mulangira had already ruled the case in favour of Twagira but NFA appealed the case. Instead of getting any reliefs, the Court of Appeala judges even increased the 6% interest that Mulangira had awarded Twagira to 20%.
