Kawempe South Member of Parliament Sebuliba Mutumba has called on cabinet to quickly pass the bio-technology and bio-safety policy to protect farmers produce in Uganda.
The call follows researchers concerns over the delay in passing the bill which may put the county agricultural produce at risk.
In 2009 the Uganda National Council for Science and Technology developed a bill known as bio-technology bio-safety bill which among other thing is meant to implement the 2008 policy to minimise and manage any potential risks to the environment and human health that may be associated with genetically modified organisms.
He says the parliament has played its part and it’s upon the cabinet to immediate action on controversial issues like using of genetically modified organism.
Meanwhile the speaker of parliament Hon. Edward Sekandi has challenged agricultural researches to engage in valuable research so as to support agriculture development in Uganda.
Addressing the participants attending their ministerial conference on higher education in agricultural Sekadi says research fundamental for the development of the sector but should be practical.
He further underscored the importance of higher institutions in the economical transformation challenging the African nations to increase funding to higher institutions.
