Electoral Commission Boss Warns Army on involvement in Election

The Chairman Electoral Commission Engineer Badru Kigundu has warned members of the Uganda People’s defense Forces against destabilizing the electoral process as the previous elections have been.

At a workshop in Kampala in Kampala, Kigundu said that it has been a phenomenon that the Uganda Peoples’ Defense Forces (UPDF) have been engaged in destabilizing the previous elections according to reports from public and the international observers.

The workshop attracted all national security bodies including UPDF, Police and Prison officers to discuss on how the 2011 elections will be conducted peacefully.

Kigundu says that peace and security is required but the enforcers should not be partisan and a threat in these 2011 elections.

At the same workshop, the Inspector General of Police Major General Kale Kayihura said that they are planning to train 18,000 police officers and100 civilians in every village who will ensure peaceful elections in the February 2011 elections.

But Kaihura also said they will deploy the army “if need arises”.
