Minister Threatens Uganda Human Rights Commission over movie mentioning homosexuality

The Minister of Ethics and Integrity James Dr. James Nsaba Buturo has threatened to close the Uganda Human Rights Commission for screening what he terms as a movie that promotes homosexuality.

Buturo says that his office had stopped the Commission from screening the movie on Monday until further notice but the commission has gone ahead and screened the movie.

The Chairman of the Uganda Human Rights Commission, Medi Kaggwa yesterday led the screening of the movie to journalists in Kampala, describing Buturo’s orders as high handed and unnecessary. He said there is nothing promoting homosexuality in the movie that is aimed at showing the challenges that human rights defenders go through.

Kaggwa said there is slight mention of how homosexuals find challenges in accessing HIV related care and services, which Kaggwa says is not promoting homosexuality but highlighting an issue of public concern.

But Buturo insists that the film has a content of lesbianism and homosexuality that his ministry cannot condone. He says that he will hold talks with the Commission and if they fail to follow the rules the ministry is going to take a stern decision against the Commission.

“When we formed this Commission we thought they would respect our African norms than protecting the western cultures,” Buturo said.

Nsababuturo says that people should not engage in committing crimes because they are exercising their rights.
