John Culver Wooddy Scholarship Guidelines Academic Year 2011-2012

The John Culver Wooddy Scholarship was established in 1996 by the estate of John Culver Wooddy, a distinguished actuary who set aside funds to provide scholarships to  encourage the academic achievement of students pursuing an actuarial career. Each award winner will receive a $2,000 scholarship for educational expenses.

Eligibility

Undergraduate students who will receive their undergraduate degree in December 2011, Spring or Summer 2012 and no later than August 31, 2012, rank in the top quartile of their class and have successfully completed one actuarial examination are eligible. Students must be recommended by a professor from their school (limit one application per school).

Award

$2,000 (U.S.)

Deadline

Applications must be postmarked by Friday, June 24, 2011.

Application Procedure

Students must complete the application and write a brief essay as part of the application process (application item 6). Preference will be given to candidates who have demonstrated leadership potential through extracurricular activities. The student should then submit the completed application and essay to a professor at the student’s school. The professor should verify the student’s class ranking and senior status, and prepare a letter of recommendation.

Selection

Scholarships will be awarded by the Research Committee of The Actuarial Foundation based upon the information provided, particularly the recommendation letter and essay. Scholarship winners will be notified by Friday, August 26, 2011.
