The Government has handed back in Buliisa district formerly occupied by immigrant Balalo herdsmen who migrated there to indigenous Bagungu.
This follows last week’s forceful eviction of Balalo from Bulisa after over two years of court battles between Balalo and bagungu over land in the area.
The Coordinator of Security Forces Gen. David Tinyefuza who led the eviction exercise yesterday handed back the land to indigenous Bagungu.
He dismissed allegations that the government has forcefully taken over the land of balalo because some government officers want to take over because it has oil underneath.
He said the balalo had wrongfully acquired the land from a few unscrupulous bagungu and the Court of Appeal ordered that the Bablolo should vacate the land and it reverts back to the indigenous Bagungu.
Bunyoro Kingdom’s Minister of Lands and natural Resources, George Kyaligonza welcomed the government’s return of the land to the indigenous people and promised the kingdom will work with local people to acquire titles for their land.
