The Kingdom of Buganda has said that they will not meet parliament over the Cultural Institutions Bill before they receive the whitepaper with changes the ministers have made to the bill since it was sent back for review.
Buganda Kingdom Minister for Infromation, Charles peter Mayiga says that they need to officially received the reviewed bill and be given time for the Kingdom to internalize it before they meet the Members of Parliament.
He says the kingdom’s cabinet met and decided not to consider the proposed Cultural leaders Institutions Bill, and that position can only be changed after another cabinet meeting.
The Parliamentary Constitutional Affairs Committee has called for delegates from various cultural institutions in Uganda to Parliament to give their views on the Cultural Institutions Bill that was withdrawn from parliament for more review.
The Speaker to Parliament Edward Sekandi who is also a Muganda says that parliament has called delegates from different Kingdoms because the bill affects all the Kingdoms and advises the Baganda not to make the bill a Buganda issue alone.
Some Members of Parliament from Buganda Kingdom have asked the Speaker to suspend the bill saying that parliament has other crucial issues to discuss than the Cultural bill.
President Yoweri Museveni who is the Chairman of the ruling NRM met MPs from Buganda and agreed on changes to the bill that he said must be passed before the February 18th elections.
