The Ministry of Education has asked government to increase the bursaries of nursing students to reduce the problem of few nurses in hospitals.
The commissioner of higher education in the Ministry of Education Robert Odek Ocheng says that his ministry is seeking for more money from the Ministry of Finance to sponsor more nursing students.
He adds that government is planning to employ foreign health workers to reduce the scarcity of nurses or health workers in the country.
However a professor at the Makerere University College of Health Sciences Prof. Nelson Sewankambo says that increasing the number of students will be good if government increases the number of teachers in nursing institutions proportionately.
Sewankambo says that government currently sponsors 120 students to the government main nursing school in Mulago. He says that if the number of students increase, more lecturers will be required and more hospitals will be required to allocate them for practical lessons.
