The ruling National Resistance Movement and the opposition Inter Party Coalition have both denied organising any militia group to help their political motives during the 2011 general elections.
This follows concerns by the Uganda Electoral Commission that different political parties have formed militias in the guise of protecting their votes, but the EC is worried about the violence that may erupt from the competing militias.
EC Chairman, Dr. Badru Kiggundu on Wednesday named nine groups including Kikankane, Blue Cobra, Red Brigade, Black Mamba, Bamboo Youth brigade, Kibooko Squad, 3K Brigade, Mwoyo Gwagwanga and the Black Brigade; although he did not say which political party either group was linked to. But many fingers have been pointing to the ruling NRM, the Forum for Democratic Change/ Inter party Coalition and the Democratic Party.
The Deputy Spokesperson for NRM, Ofwono Opondo says the party has not organised or funded any militia group, and asked the police to arrest anyone engaged in such acts.
The Spokesperson for the Inter Party Coalition, Margaret Wokuri said on Thursday the IPC does not have any links with any militia and was working through organs of the cooperating political parties.
Uganda is remaining with less than a month to hold the long awaited elections with presidential and parliamentary polls set for February18th 2011.
