Education qualifications are turning out to be a defining factor in the Kampala mayoral race with the two leading contenders Erias Lukwango and Peter Sematimba involved.
Erias Lukwago, the MP for Kampala central who is competing as an independent today appeared before the Electoral Commission to defend his academic papers after a voter petitioned the EC questioning Lukwago’s academic papers.
But Lukwago instead emerged from the Electoral Commission offices as a jubilant man, waving papers of what he termed as NRM candidate peter Sematimba’s “fraudulent academic papers” which he (Lukwago) claimed to have got secretly from a concerned Commissioner at the EC who wanted to expose the rot.
Lukwago took the chance to criticise the Electoral Commission which he referred to as incompetent and unable to organise free and fair elections.
He said the EC headed by Dr. Badru Kiggundu has always known about anomalies in Sematimba’s academic papers but never bothered to investigate him, yet Likwago was summoned immediately someone raised concerns over his papers.
Lukwago displayed photocopies of what he said are Sematimba’s documents indicating that Sematimba completed a theology diploma in a certificate at the International College of Excellency in America in 2005.
