NAADS pigs die in Masaka due to swine flu

The pigs that were supplied to some residents of Masaka district under National Agricultural Advisory Services (NAADS) program are getting depleted by what some are calling African swine flu disease.

The Masaka district Veterinary Officer Lawrence Bayiga says that about 500 cases of pig deaths have been recorded in a period of two weeks.

Bayiga has put quarantine on pigs in Masaka not to be moved to other areas to avoid the spread of the disease.

The office of the Veterinary Officer in Masaka has threatened that whoever will be found selling pork will be imprisoned for 2 months or fined 2,000,000 shillings.

It was however not possible to establish from the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Husbandry whether the disease affecting the pigs in Masaka is the same or similar to the dangerous swine flu fever that affected pigs in different parts of the world two years ago.
