The Uganda National Examinations Board has released the 2010 Uganda Certificate of Education senior four examinations results showing more students managed to pass the exams although there was a decline in performance from 99.5% in 2009 compared to 93.5% in 2010.

The results released by UNEB Executive Secretary Mathew Bukenya show that 243,305 students (80%) of the students in 2010 passed the exams, compared to 203,092 in 2009 who passed in grade one, two, three and four (of the 218,056 who sat).
A total of 264,928 students sat for the 2010 UNEB examinations, with 18,709 passing in Grade one, 42,455 in grade two, 62,355 in third grade, 117,937 in fourth grade while 16740 candidates scored 9th grade (failed).
While receiving the results at Statistics House on Tuesday Morning, the Minister of Education and Sports, Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire expressed happiness at the improved number of people passing the senior four exams. She said the government is happy that such a performance was got when 117,511 students who studied under Universal Secondary Education sat for the first time.

Minister Bitamazire advised those who did not perform well to consider joining vocational and technical schools to get hands on skills for a better future.
Bukenya said there was improved performance of English, Islam, Chemistry, Physics, Swahili, Agriculture and Commerce, while Biology and Christian Religious Education saw decreased performance. He said that girls performed slightly better than boys especially in Literature and English language.
UNEB Chairman, Prof. Lutalo Bbosa said many students from upcountry are still finding it hard to express themselves in English, which continues to see them perform poorly in national examinations as teachers marking cannot understand what the students mean in their answers.
UNEB examined the 2010 senior four results in 51 subjects, including first time language exams of Acholi, Langi, Lugbar and Runyakitara.
