Uganda government and opposition agree to hold talks

Opposition parties have said they are ready for a political dialogue but on certain conditions. Parties including the FDC, DP, JEMA, UPC, and Conservative party released a joint statement demanding for the release of all opposition leaders and members who are currently being detained at Nakasongola government prison.

The UPC party president Olara Otunu says the arrest of Dr.Kiiza Besigye and Norbert Mao during the walk to work demonstration last week was illegal.

Meanwhile government has also Okayed oppositions idea to sit-down and holds a peaceful dialogue with opposition groups engaged in the walk to work protest.

The opposition kicked-off the demonstrations on 11th April 2011 to protest the skyrocketing prices of fuel, food and other basic necessities in the country.

The country wide demonstration has led to five deaths as the protestors clash with police and the military officers.

So far two mediate groups have come up namely the inter-religious council and inter-party for dialogue (IPOD) funded by the Netherlands government have offered to the mediation between the opposition and the government.

Information minister Kabakumba Mastiko says the government is willingly and ready to talk.
