Parliament concludes public hearings of anti homosexuality bill

The legal and parliamentary affairs committee of parliament has entered its final day of conducting the public hearings on the controversial anti homosexuality bill.

Uganda Information and national Guidance Minister, Kabakumba Masiko

The chairperson of the committee Steven Tashobya says that the bill has been overshadowed by other government programs but says that it is high time parliament gives it a priority.

He says that by the end of the Tuesday, the report will be ready and if the committee is given an opportunity they will go ahead and present the report on the floor of parliament before the end of the 8th parliament so that the bill is discussed and passed by Parliament.

Although the government through Information and National Guidance minister Kabakumba Masiko has come out to say the bill is not necessary because the current penal code already outlaws homosexuality, Tashobya says that the committee has decided to deal with bill due to public demand.

Several religious groups have been demanding for the enactment of the anti homosexuality bill they say should bring more punishment to those promoting homosexuality, and those forcing other people into the act.

There is strong concern from human rights groups that the anti homosexuality bill is being discussed so fast in the parliament and MPs whose term expires on Thursday might pass it without further debate.
