MPs elect from across the country have today had their first induction workshop on the gas and oil legislation policies.
The workshop that has been organised by the Parliamentary Forum on Oil and Gas has been run on a theme “working with legislators to promote extractive Industries, transparency Initiative and a strong legislative framework for managing oil and Gas in Uganda .
The workshop has been attended by the freshly elected MPs from across the country, as well as civil society organisations.
A number of topics have been discussed ranging from the current status and road map on oil and Gas production in the country, the legal framework in the oil and Gas sector, as well as the oversight role of Parliament in the oil production.
The deputy executive director of ACODE Onesimus Mugyenyi has urged the MPs elect to be very transparent in handling the oil and gas issues in Parliament.
The Cabinet recently presented a draft bill to the Parliament for discussion and debate, awaiting the passing of the bill into an act.
He has cautioned the MPs to always put the national issues ahead of party politics as they deal with the sector. He has cautioned them against letting themselves be gagged by the Executive.
The Chairperson of the Public Accounts Committee in Parliament has also reminded the yet to be sworn in legislators that accountability is a serious issue that should not be politicized.
He says that they will have themselves to blame if they put party ahead of service delivery for their people.
