The Speaker of Parliament Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi has kept his cards close to his chest in the race for the speakership.
Having served as speaker for the 7th and 8th Parliament respectively, Ssekandi faces stiff competition from his deputy Rebecca Kadaga, should he decide to go for another term.

On why he is not campaigning, Ssekandi says he does his things differently and that he will answer at the appropriate time. Sekandi notes that he is however interested in the work he is doing.
According to the procedure used in the 7th and 8th elections for Parliament, names are nominated and the Members vote according to their choice of preference. There are however fears within a cross section of members who fear the party influencing on who to vote.
Ssekandi says he is however ready to serve in any capacity that the Members may vote him in for.
He prospectively looks into improving things and the way business has been conducted in the 8th Parliament given that it has been the first multi party Parliament in Uganda.
Sekandi if he stands again , will also face competition from Budadiri west MP Nandala mafabi .
Mean while ,sekandi says that Parliament may be forced to temporarily conduct transact its business in the Conference hall given the lack of space, enough for the 382 MPs set to be sworn in next week.
About the pending bills, Ssekandi says that they are going to handle a number of them today and the rest will be pushed to the next Parliament. Among the key bills is the anti homosexuality bill 2010, and the Marriage and Divorce bill.
The 8th parliament is concluding its term today Wednesday 11th May 2011.
