Uganda parliament Speaker’s race heats up as more MPs vie

The race for the slot of Parliamentary speaker and deputy speaker is gaining more momentum as more MPs express their interest in the most coveted slots at Parliament.

Ndorwa West Member of Parliament Alfred Nuwagaba has also joined the race this morning by declaring his interest in the deputy speaker’s slot.

A trained and practicing lawyer, Nuwagaba has been dubbed as a rebel MP in the NRM circles for standing his ground against the party’s official position on issues he feels touch his electorates.

Nuwagaba says he will focus on promoting the independence of Parliament, ensuring proper arrangement of Parliamentary business, and prioritization of issues of public concern among others.

Nuwagaba says that the Office of the speaker of Parliament should be drawn far away from the party politics.

He has also vowed to take the battle for deputy speakership to the next level if there is internal democracy in his party during the voting for the deputy speaker’s office.

Nuwagaba will have to fend off competition from a host of other NRM MPs such as the Peter Nyombi of Nakasongola and former state house legal adviser Fox Odoi.

The speaker’s slot is contested for by the outgoing deputy speaker Rebecca Kadaga of NRM and the FDC leaning Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee Nandal Mafabi.
