The Kamuli Woman Member of Parliament, Rebecca Kadaga (NRM) has won the hotly contested elections for the speaker of parliament that was conducted on May 19.
Kadaga has beaten her lone rival Nandala Mafabi (FDC Budadiri County, Sironko district) who had been nominated by the opposition side in the parliament.
Kadaga has won with 302 votes while Mafabi has collected only 57 votes.
The Chief Justice Benjamin Odoki who presided over the elections at Parliament has declared Kadaga as the new speaker of parliament for five years.
Nandala Mafabi was nominated by the Makindye West MP, Hussein Kyenjo and seconded by John Ken Lukyamuzi and Beatrice Anywar MPs for Rubaga south and Kitgum woman respectively.
Rebecca Kadaga the former deputy speaker in the 8th Parliament was nominated by the party (NRM) General Secretary, Amama Mbabazi and seconded by MP Rose Namayanja.
The former Speaker Edward Sekandi (NRM) was also nominated and seconded but declined to contest against his party colleague, Rebecca Kadaga the party had chosen to hold the flag.
