The Woman MP for Mityana district Sylvia Namabidde has called upon government and parliament to give health sector the first priority if Uganda is to develop.
Speaking to journalists at parliament Namabidde said that poor health has been a major hindrance of development and therefore it should be tackled seriously.
She also noted that the issue of commodity prices should also be given a priority since it is affecting every Ugandan. Namabidde says that during the president’s state of nation address and the budget speech, the two health concerns should take the lead.
Namabidde also expressed concern on the government allocation to agriculture sector. She says that 80% of Ugandans are agriculturalists and therefore more resources should be allocated to agriculture.
She says that if government is to transform the economy it should first deal with the peasants. Namabidde says that government should also focus on peasants than majorly focusing on the middle class and entrepreneurs.
She also criticized the NAADS programme saying that it leaves out major ingredients which can help the farmers. Namabidde says that NAADS should not only stop at seed supply but also take on the whole farming process which involves water for irrigation, supplying fertilizers and also looking for market.
The government will next month present the national budget 2011/2012 in which it will outline government expenditures and priorities, on the same day President Museveni will deliver his first state of the nation address to the 9th Parliament.
