He is a talented musician. He is a leader of other musicians. He is a famous singer and crowd puller. And yes, he is stinking rich. These are some of the ways to describe Bobi Wine, but we all know he is more than this, and it is just not easy to describe him well. Despite his obviously controversial brand (self admitted ganja smoker, muyaye, chali etc), Bobi Wine is probably one of Uganda’s most loved musicians alongside Juliana Kanyomozi.
Even those who don’t like him can only pay respect to the “President” for he undoubtedly has while helping out many other artists come out with the best formula to make money from music.
The self-proclaimed president of the Ghetto Republic of Uganja (formerly Firebase Crew) has made both friends and enemies and has along the way had fights with some musicians like his Nemesis Bebe Cool. Nonetheless despite that is some instances he has acted like that “Bad man from Kamwokya” his popularity amongst the Ugandan folk is immense probably because of his big heart and concern for the Ugandans from the lower social ladder.
The Mr. Money singer started his musical journey with hits like Akagoma, before having collabos with singer Bebe Cool in Funtula and Juliana in Taata Wabana Yani and Mama Mbire that made him a household icon in Uganda’s music industry. Bobi Wine (Born Robert Kyagulanyi) has had other hits like Kiwani, Mbada, Mazzi Mawanvu, Katala to mention but a few and has released over five albums in his illustrious music career.
One of the most notable attributes of Bobi Wine as a singer is the ability to mature over the years. In the recent years, the singer moved from singing just for the sake of it to singing for the purpose of educating the public in what he dubbed the edutainment mission. The edutainment venture has already produced results with educative songs like Carolina (or Namusanga Ndeeba), Mr. Money and Obululu Tebutwawula turning out to be successful songs.
Bobi Wine is also among the few settled family figures in Uganda’s entertainment industry. He is married to Barbara Itunga with whom they have two children; a son Kampala and a daughter, Nairobi. But what really makes Bobi Wine tick or otherwise?
