The Parliament of Uganda has approved the creation of more ministerial posts and those of state ministers, but some MPs expressed concern over the increase in public expenditure. Six new ministries will be added to Uganda’s 2011 cabinet.
Museveni in his letter dated May 23 addressed to speaker Rebecca Kadaga, said that he wanted these posts created to achieve his much-desired promises to Ugandans.
Currently, according to Museveni, there are 21 cabinet posts and 41 state ministerial posts. Museveni says that this is aimed at increasing on political supervision to achieve proper service delivery.
However, the approval to vary the number of ministries did not come on a silver platter because the MPs tasked the incoming prime minister who moved the motion to increase the posts Amama Mbabazi to explain why he wanted members to approve a motion that did not specify the exact names of the intended ministries.
Mbabazi asked members to approve the request and leave the president to make a decision on what particular ministries should be created.
The opposition tried to block the increase suggesting that it will increase expenditure on public offices but with little success until the speaker Rebecca Kadaga put a question to approve the motion and it was passed.
