Storms leave Namutamba district facing imminent hunger

Legislators from Namutumba district have called for government and non governmental organisation’s intervention if residents there are to survive the looming hunger.

The call comes after a rain storm hit the district recently leaving several people homeless, animals and poultry killed, washed away their crops in addition to destroying property worth shs2.6 billion.

Busiki MP Asupasa Isiko Mpongo and Namutumbab district woman MP Florence Mutyabule told journalists at parliament that the storm severely hit 20 villages.

The duo mentioned Isegero, Namukoge, Busene, and Nabikenge among others as some of the affected villages. He also said that all the roads in the area were washed away

Mutyabule expressed worry that if government does not quickly come to the residents’ rescue, over 400 pupils may abandon school since their school classrooms fell down due to the heavy storm.

She also says that families need food because they have lost hope for harvesting since their crops were washed away. Mutyabule says that people have been depending on mangoes which are now also destroyed.
