Lira regional referral hospital has been hit by an acute blood shortage leading to the death of two expectant mothers. The deceased have been identified as Nidi Achen and Achola Eunice.
The medical superintendent lira referral hospital Dr. Jane Acheng Ocholo says the deceased passed away on Saturday because of severe anemia.
Ocholo explained that Achen was admitted to the hospital in the 2nd stage of her labour after losing a lot of blood. She says Acheno was discovered be severely anemic and needed blood transfusion but there was no blood to save her life.
The second woman Eunice Achola reported to the hospital on the 25th of May 2011 with high fever but diagnosed with Malaria.
She says that the hospital had run out of blood on the 22nd of May 2011 as there was no kit to screen blood from donors.
Henry Ligale the hospital administrator of Lira referral hospital says they only received 25 units of blood on Tuesday but it may not last for two days.
