The Uganda Cranes moved a step closer to qualify for the African Cup of Nations finals with a commanding 2-0 win at Mandela national Stadium in Namboole, Kampala Saturday evening.
The win makes Uganda lead group D with 10 points, six ahead of Kenya on four points. The other group leaders Angola and Guinea Bissau have three points, but Kenya and Angola play their equal group fixture tomorrow Sunday.
Uganda who were playing comfortably on a cool Saturday in Kampala went ahead through Bunamwaya forward, Geoffrey Serunkuma who slotted passed the Guinea Bissau goalkeeper towards the end of the first half.
Egypt based Geoffrey Massa doubled the advantage in the 72nd minute after the Cranes had dominated play to send the over 40,000 Uganda fans in a frenzy of excitement.
Some Ugandans have already started preparing to escort the Uganda Cranes to the CAF finals after more than 34 years of absence from Africa’s elite soccer competition.
Uganda now need just one point from the remaining two group matches, one against Angola in Luanda, and Kenya in Kampala.
Cranes Coach Bobby Williamson was ecstatic praising his charges for good concentration and goalkeeper Denis Onyango for managing to maintain a clean sheet. Guinea Bissau had their good chances but Onyango was at his best to deny them any goal, despite earlier worries that an injury he got in training might rule him out of the game.
The matched was watched by multitudes of Ugandans and live cast on UBC television.
