Over 65% of the private health units in Kampala district that have been operating illegally and with unqualified personnel were closed.
This was disclosed by the registrar Uganda medical and dental council Dr Katumba Sentongo while addressing journalists at the ministry headquarters.
He told reporters that the findings were discovered in an operation conducted by the joint health professional councils ,pharmaceutical society of Uganda and the national drug authority in may this year.
Sentongo revealed that this was aimed at assessing the quality of service delivery in private general clinics, drug shops, and maternity homes. And hospital’s in Kampala.
He said that operation followed a public outcry that many private drug shops and clinics don’t adhere to the standard required for them to practice. He revealed that a total of 180 institutions were inspected and 70% were wanting.
He urged the local authorities to ensure that the closed facilities do not open without clearance from the professional councils.
