Makerere University don, Prof Augustus Nuwagaba has blasted President Museveni’s policy on encouraging big populations as a means of ensuring that there is economic development.
Uganda currently has an estimated 33 million people, with the second highest population growth rate in the world.
While some people have called for family planning and reducing population growth, President Museveni has been a strong advocate of a big population, citing countries like China and India which use their big population for better market and labour.
During his presentation at the Members of Parliament workshop, Nuwagaba says a country like Uganda cannot afford such a big population as the likes of China.
He says such countries have developed because they have many multinational companies, many of which are owned by the Chinese businessmen.
Prof. Nuwagaba also notes that government’s microeconomic and macroeconomic interventions have not made such a big improvement in Uganda.
He notes that much as Uganda has very good interventions and policies in place, the country has lagged behind in the practical aspect of the economy.
He has advised MPs to make interventions that will enable Ugandans draw themselves out of poverty, many of whom are living in abject poverty.
