Buvuma district leaders warn residents on deforestation

The Buvuma district leaders have asked the district residents to avoid engaging in cutting trees for charcoal and timber.

While at a meeting with charcoal burners and timber dealers, the Buvuma district Forest Officer, Gladys Nalunkuma said that the business will make the district a desert.

Nalunkuma says that after depleting fish from Lake Victoria people in the area have turned to cutting trees for charcoal and timber for survival. Buvuma district is an island in Lake Victoria.

She asks people who fail in fishing exercise to go back to farming and save the trees adding that trees play a big role in modifying the environment.

Nalunkuma has raised the tax on a sac of charcoal to 5,000 shillings as a measure of reducing its demand hence saving the trees.
