Lawyer asks court to acquit Thoman Nkurungira

A city lawyer John Patrick Barenzi representing Thoman Nkurungira alias Tonku in a murder case of his girlfriend Brendah Karamuzi has asked the high court to acquit Tonku and instead hold Tonku’s shamba boy Fred Ssempijja to be responsible for the murder.

Barenzi has told a court session presided over by Justice Rugadya Atwooki that prosecution has failed to prove the offence of murder against Tonku beyond reasonable doubt.

Barenzi said that Tonku testified before court that the deceased was his girlfriend and they never had any misunderstandings.

Barenzi said that prosecution has not challenged this but it defeats common sense of how Tonku could brutally kill Brenda for no reason.

Barenzi added that it is only Ssempijja’s confession and un sworn testimony linking Tonku to the crime but other pieces of evidence like Mobile phone records prove that Tonku was not at his residence throughout the alleged fateful day of 22nd to 23rd of January last year.

Barenzi said Ssempijja had complete access to Tonku’s house and must know how Brenda met her death from Tonku’s house.

Tonku and Ssempijja allegedly committed the offence between the 22nd to 30th of January last year.

Brendah’s body was recovered on 30th January from a septic tank near a house that Tonku rented in Bukasa Makindye division Kampala district.
