Health officer arrest over drug theft

The officer in-charge of Adiki health centre II in Amachi sub-county in Lira district Dickens Omonu has come under fire for

alleged theft of drugs. It all started after Benard Adoko Amachi chairman petitioned Lira district officer demanding his intervention over the theft of government drugs.

In his letter Adoko accuses Amonu of stealing 12 boxes of assorted malaria drugs including coartem. The medical worker in-charge of Erute health sub-district Michael says that he went to verify requisitions and found a huge dispirited in the drugs delivered at the hospital.

Akulu claims he tasked Omonu to account for the missing drugs within the shortest time possible something that he failed to do up to date as received no report.

As result Susan Akenyi Lira district police commander has asked police to investigate the matter and ensure Amonu is prosecuted.

Akenyi says the cases of safety of drugs are rampant in lower health centres because of lack of supervision and inspections. But since then Amonu has denied any wrong doing saying that he only made a wrong entry in the month of May which authorities have rejected.

Dr. Peter Kusolo Lira district health officer has in steady ordered for the immediate arrest of Amonu. Kusolo says the medical worker involved in drug safety should be punished and dismissed with disgrace saying are matter of life and death.

He however tasked the local leaders to provide sufficient evidence to ensure successful prosecution of Amonu. Kusolo says several health workers implicated of drugs theft have walked away free because of lack of witness to pin them down in court.
