The government has been called upon to speed up the enactment of the building and constructs law so as to reduce the rate of collapsing buildings in the country.
The chairperson Uganda national association of building and civil engineering contractors Gumisiriza Barantaine told the press in Kampala that some of the laws are out dated.
This follows an incident at Bukoto in Kampala where the building collapsed injuring seven (7) people and destroying several vehicles. Engineer Birantaina observed that most supervisors and site engineers no longer perform their duties.
He said in some instances craft people have taken the roles of engineer. Birantaina also mentioned corruption and sub-standard material facing the building and construction sector.
