Mbarara University of science and technology plans to stage a demonstration in August to protest against the increasing number of road accidents on the campus.
The students say the planned demonstration is intended to bring the matter to the attention of the traffic police and the Uganda national roads authority.
Mbarara University of science and technology Guild President Alau Semanda said yestrday that sixteen (16) students been knocked down by over speeding vehicles at the university gate.
He explained that most accidents occurred between the main campus site and the faculty of development studies.
The guild president said he was shocked that the university administration’s failure to avert the situation. He says speed reduction traffic sign that were alleged removed by one of the construction company during the re-construction of the road early this year have not yet been put back.
The university guild president expressed concern that more accidents could occur as the new students report to the university next month.
The Uganda national roads authority Mbarara station engineer Constant Munyabanza has acknowledged receiving the student concerns.
He says have notified the contractor to reinstate the road signs and humps but admits they have been slow to respond.
