The Uganda teachers union has temporary resolved t suspend their sit-down strike for a month to allow a committee set-up by the president Yoweri Museveni do its work.
The announcement follows a meeting between UNATU leaders and President Yoweri Museveni on Thursday at state House Entebbe.
Announcing the suspension of strike at Bat valley primary school in Kampala on Friday, the UNATU chairperson Margret Rwabushaija said during their meeting on Thursday with the president, Museveni set-up an inter-ministerial committee which was tasked to review the 20110-2012 budget to see possibilities of increasing the teachers’ salaries with immediate effect.
The committee is expected to complete its findings and report to the president by 28th August 2011. Rwabushaija said if their salaries are not increased after the August 28th, the teachers resume their strike.
Teachers across the country laid down their tools on Thursday in response to their joint demand for 100% salary increment among other reforms in the education sector.
