In a bid to avert the negative consequences of the rapid Urbanization, government has expressed commitment towards eradication of slums by providing lands to build better housing units.
The state Minister for lands Housing and Urban Development Sam Engola say a special fund has been created to ensure that resources like land and funds are provided to ensure that the livelihoods of the increasing slum dwellers are improved.
Speaking at the African cities Dialogue on City wide Slum Upgrading Conference in Kampala, Engola says the government has so far allocated 40 acres of land in Nsambya for construction of low cost housing units for the evicted residents of Nakawa-Naguru estates.
He reveals that in addition to the fund, government is planning to enact laws that will ensure better infrastructure, social services and housing facilities for at least One million people by the year 2020.
